Apartments in El Palo, Malaga, are the ideal choice if you want to stay by the sea in an authentic neighbourhood, with the beach a few minutes’ walk away, espeto bars lining the seafront promenade and the historic centre around 20 minutes away by bus. El Palo is the old fishing quarter on the east side of the city, relaxed and family-friendly, and in this selection we bring together holiday rentals in El Palo and along the surrounding coastline, with Pedregalejo as its next-door neighbour, for families, couples and groups of friends.

If you are still comparing coastal areas, our page of beach apartments in Malaga covers accommodation along the whole of the city’s seafront, from La Malagueta to the far east end.

Why stay in El Palo, Malaga’s seafaring neighbourhood

We locals love El Palo because this is where the city slows down. Low fishermen’s houses sit alongside sunny terraces, traditional jábega boats rest on the sand and in the late afternoon neighbours stroll along the promenade with their hair still damp from the sea. Almost any time of day, the air smells of charcoal and salt.

It is a neighbourhood with a life of its own. There is a local market, old-school bakeries, pharmacies, supermarkets and bars where the waiter knows your order by day three. Staying here lets you live Malaga the way the locals do, with the sea on your doorstep and none of the late-night bustle of the centre. And when you feel like the city, its museums or a bit of shopping, Soho and the historic centre are just a short ride away.

Behind the neighbourhood rise the Montes de Málaga and Monte San Antón, so in a single day you can hike up for a view over the whole bay in the morning and come back down for fried fish lunch with your feet practically in the sand.

What our apartments in El Palo and the eastern coastline are like

Can you picture opening the window in the morning and feeling the sea breeze before anything else? An apartment gives you a freedom a hotel simply cannot match: breakfast whenever you like, fruit from the market in the fridge and no rush when you come back from the beach to shower before heading out for dinner.

This selection includes comfortable studios for a couples’ getaway as well as duplexes and larger apartments for families or groups. Depending on the property, you will find a terrace, sea views or a location just minutes from the shoreline. We recommend checking the capacity, layout and amenities on each listing before you book. That way you choose the one that truly fits your trip.

As a general rule, the accommodation in this category offers:

The beaches of El Palo and nearby

Malaga’s eastern coast is a string of urban beaches with dark sand, usually calm waters and facilities close at hand. From El Palo you can walk from one to the next along the promenade, and each has a character of its own.

A tip from your hosts: head down to the shore one morning at dawn. The sun rises straight out of the east, the sea is flat as glass and the fishermen are hauling in their nets. It is one of those moments you won’t find in any guidebook, and it often becomes the best memory of the trip.

What to eat in El Palo: espetos and fried fish

If there is one place in Malaga where the espeto is taken seriously, it is El Palo. Sardines are skewered on a cane and grilled over embers in sand-filled boats, turned patiently until the skin crackles. Locals say the best ones are eaten in the months without an “r”, from May to August, although nobody turns them down in October.

Beyond the espeto, the neighbourhood’s seafood menu includes fried anchovies, squid, horse mackerel and red mullet, plus coquinas and clams when the sea allows. In some restaurants the waiters walk around with trays calling out the dishes and you pick as they pass, a very Malaga experience that is worth having at least once.

To eat like a neighbour, wander into the inner streets of the barrio, where tapas are far less touristy. And if you are not sure where to go, just ask us: we always have a favourite beach bar of the moment.

Things to do in El Palo beyond the beach

El Palo offers much more than a towel and a swim. You can follow the trails up Monte San Antón and take in the whole bay, or walk and cycle along the promenade to Pedregalejo, Baños del Carmen and La Malagueta. Sunset at Baños del Carmen, with its eucalyptus trees and old seaside-resort feel, is one of the city’s favourites.

If you are here in July, don’t miss the Virgen del Carmen festivities, when the whole neighbourhood takes to the streets and the statue of the Virgin is carried out to sea in a maritime procession. By car, in just over half an hour you can reach the white villages of the Axarquía or the coves of Nerja.

Getting around from El Palo

One of the advantages of staying in El Palo is that you have the beach at your door and the city close by. Several city bus lines, including the 3 and the 11, connect the neighbourhood with the centre in around 20 to 25 minutes, and a taxi takes about a quarter of an hour without traffic. If you would rather spend a few nights right in the old town, take a look at our apartments in Malaga city centre.

To get here from the airport, these are the most common options:

  1. By taxi or ride-hailing, around 25 minutes on the motorway, the most direct option with luggage.
  2. By hire car, very handy if you plan day trips along the Costa del Sol or into the Axarquía.
  3. By Cercanías commuter train to the centre, then a city bus to El Palo.
  4. By the airport express bus to the centre, connecting with a city bus line from there.

El Palo, Pedregalejo or the centre: which area suits you

Choosing an area means choosing how you want to spend your holiday. El Palo is a great fit if you are after beach time, peace and quiet and seafood cooking with a real neighbourhood feel. Pedregalejo shares that spirit, with a little more going on at night and slightly closer to the centre. If your plans revolve around monuments, museums and nightlife on foot, the historic centre and Soho will be more practical, while La Malagueta is the city beach for those who want everything within walking distance.

How far is El Palo from Malaga city centre?

El Palo is about 6 km from the historic centre. By city bus, on lines such as the 3 or the 11, the journey takes around 20 to 25 minutes, and by taxi about 15 minutes without traffic. You can also walk or cycle along the seafront promenade if you fancy a long stroll by the sea.

Is it worth staying in El Palo instead of the centre?

It depends on what you are looking for. If you prioritise the beach, a relaxed pace and seafood, El Palo is one of the best areas to stay in Malaga. If your trip is built around museums, monuments and nightlife on foot, the centre will be more convenient. Many travellers choose El Palo because it combines downtime by the sea with the centre just a short ride away.

What is El Palo beach like?

It is an urban beach of dark sand, just over a kilometre long, with generally calm waters, a seafront promenade, showers and plenty of beach bars. A few minutes’ walk away you will find other beaches such as El Dedo, Las Acacias and Pedregalejo.

When is the best time to rent an apartment in El Palo?

From June to September you will enjoy the liveliest beach atmosphere and espetos at their peak, plus the Virgen del Carmen festivities in July. In spring and autumn the weather is still pleasant, there are fewer people and availability is usually better.

Are apartments in El Palo good for families with children?

Yes. It is a very family-friendly area, with gently shelving beaches, a wide promenade, parks and everyday services close by. An apartment gives you a kitchen, more space and flexible routines, which makes a real difference when travelling with children.

How do I get from Malaga airport to El Palo?

The most direct way is by taxi, ride-hailing or hire car, with a journey of around 25 minutes. By public transport, the usual route is to take the Cercanías train or the airport bus to the centre, then a city bus to El Palo.

Are there apartments in El Palo with sea views or a terrace?

Yes, this selection includes properties with a terrace and others with sea views or right by the shore. Features vary from one apartment to another, so check each listing to find the one that best suits what you are looking for.

Can I rent an apartment in El Palo for weeks or months?
